minimal wave: both a genre of underground diy electronic music from north america and europe in the late 1970s and 80s, and the name of the label devoted to unearthing these recordings. the minimal wave tapes is the first official anthology of minimal wave music from this label. most of the songs were originally released on limited edition cassettes or vinyl by the artists themselves, and only a handful of people knew about them. they ve been remastered from their analog source tapes and compiled here by minimal waves veronica vasicka and stones throws peanut butter wolf.

although they formed in oakland, ca, in 2002, the saviours are a deliberate throwback to an earlier time and place, specifically great britain in the late 70s and early 80s. deeply inspired by the new wave of british heavy metal as well as first generation thrashers like slayer and early metallica, the saviours formed out of the ashes of a minor east bay thrash and screamo band named after the excellently monikered actor yaphet kotto...

2009 was a great year for these days records, and 2010 promises to be even better. the platform stood out for its innovative yet functional club sound and unique artwork concepts. the new year begins with a new split series under the name universal consciousness, based on the idea of connection between all things, and that all things have been coordinated, and they combine to make up the same universe. the first part is dedicated to two very different takes on spiritual, cosmic space techno. on the a-side argys >sometimes im blind< generates a long and uplifting emotional climax, which features a solo that will forever stay in your heart. the track was recorded at the end of 2008, and despite numerous offers to release the record elsewhere, nothing was finalised and the recording never saw the light of day. soon after the birth of his own label, it naturally fit the platform and seemed a perfect way to start the new year. on the flip side, sheffield born alexander ross, brings forth a cavernous techno piece awash with reverberation and spacial echos that brings a driving yet non the less emotionally captivating moment perfectly in balance with the depth of the a-side.

>twisted tango< is the most stripped down of all three tracks and a real cool groover. one of these tracks that grow enormously with volume and space. these two guys have got a good vision of how dance music should be to clad the clubbers in cotton batting. their cool way of transmitting indifference has always been the carrier of sensuality and sexiness in entertainment and it does create a certain kind of peppermint stench here. the vocals stabs in this one work like dubby elements which deep a & biri drop like things dropping out of your pocket.

>hine gama< is as cool as the two other tracks but but a little more laissez-faire fair. we dont think that anybody will be able to resist this bright light brown colour it shows with all its reflections of intensive sunbeams shining in.

daniel steinberg and front room are like annoyingly sexy couples that you end up in the next hotel room to on a company business trip. except of course daniel steinberg and front room dont actually have sex they just literally make sweet music together. the spiciness continues with the preacherman ep, daniel steinbergs fifth release on front room recordings. punctuated with the exotic and the kind of twists, bumps and energy that only steinberg can provide, preacherman kicks off a cacophony of funk fuelled head nodding to get any party pulsating. “you need love” with its in-your-face vocal, huge beat and sleazy decelerating breakdown has future classic written all over it. the long awaited tiefschwarz remix of “lucky sauce” also sees the light of day here in full effect and breathes a new layer of ‘wow’over a release that is only really just beginning to simmer down from its release in june. wonked out groover who stopped the music rounds proceedings off nicely on an ep that is audio proof that the stroke of his talent only gets more precise and dazzling with every release. daniel steinbergs releases are supported by the likes of ricardo villalobos, luciano, claude vonstroke and richie hawtin to name drop a few. watch this space for daniel steinbergs artist album coming out on front room in 2010

circus company welcomes a new artist on the label: the homewreckers. named after a track by southern soul legend sam dees, the production collective from germany has been moving and breaking new ground between detroit techno, abstract funk and melancholic disco music since 1995. their debut album amercian ruhr has been released on unique records in 2008 and creates an absolutely distinctive sound which seems to come straight out of a from a feverish dream populated by the ghostlike figures of larry graham, juan atkins, frank hutter, bernard edwards, erik b or al green. the not my business ep perfectly shows how the homewreckers flow on these two original tracks. you feel the funk, you feel detroit and you feel a deep and unique sense of music. cherry on the cake, you got a remix from san francisco based artist dave aju who is back on the label after his much acclaimed album open wide released in 2008. not my business isnt their first shoot on the label as they were already part of last months snuggle & slap circus company compilation with a brilliant live-version of chicago urban blues.

this is the second release by antonelli for dreck after his boogie ep in 2007. in classic antonelli working method the material here is made without a cpu, just with hardware. this gives the tracks a warm feel and a sense of an older mode of production, but nevertheless the two tracks are fully rooted in the now! stefan schwander starts out with the idea of the bassline as a genre-defining element in music. he then works from this central idea towards an euphoric and a reductive version, resulting in the two tracks here at hand, >disconnected< on the a side, and >operatore< on the b side. they both feature a beautifully analogue disco (if not moroder) bassline, build up continuously without ever meandering or loosing direction - very straight and pushing the dancefloor forward with >operatore< being the more bouncy and carefree track of the two.

zagar is one of the freshest electronic bands from hungary. zságer, the leader of the band was the keyboardist and co-writer of the successful album shallow and profound from yonderboi. in autumn 2009 zagar release their new single wings of love and their second album cannot walk fly instead on mole listening pearls. on the new single wings of love they invited six of hungarys most popular independent female singers, called the underground divas. wings of love entered the top 10 charts immediately in hungary, earned heavy radio airplay and secured a no 1 position on the hungarian mtv video charts. they have earned numerous awards for this record also, most notably the hungarian record industrys phonogram award and second prize in the international songwriting competition 2008.

with the two producers marc o tool and criss source germany s electronic music scene has two of the worlds leading producers. with their worldwide dj presence both are counting to the most successful german music acts. working together since 1997 under different aliases like ballroom, motorcraft, black eyed or good fellas they had numerous releases on labels like marco s own labels underworld and mauritius of course. while criss is working as a&r at marc s labels mauritius and hosts his own radio shows on radio essen and proton radio.com, marc s productions appeared on different compilations like sensation white or ministry of sound the annual 2009. after their latest smasher on circle james at last ,now they are coming around with their next slamming two-tracker.

tiger supported by... rob da bank, kiko, markus kavka, mihalis safras, justin berkovi, ivan smagghe, orde meikle... moonbeam are back on traum! the russian brothers had a great year and have been voted as one of the top 100 djs worldwide by uk dj mag, in december 2009. we think they are wonderful, dedicated people who really deserve winning this award. with their new a-side track >tiger< moonbeam show their timeless quality and their deep knowledge of music, writing a seemingly simple but gigantic track. if you want to express in words what this track is like you might say it is a hybrid of joe beltrams >energy flash< fuelled with a melodic note and a lot of post-techno feeling. creating a revival of rave which so many people speak about, but so few actually reflect in theirproductions! the energy of this dark monumental new school acid track is counteracted by the two tracks on the flipside >land of the lost (strict mix)< and >zoo<. the b1-track >land of the lost< sounds like a soundtrack for a film set in a ghost-town in the midwest of the united states. a track that travels like a camera does... through different rooms of a deserted mansion. the b2-track >zoo< is the beat track of the record. it relies on its cool driving sequences and the hypnotic feeling it creates through them. adding small changes here and there that keep the track constantly going.

brand new imprint from those lovely people over at the acclaimed sleazybeats blog. they ve made a predictably smart move for their debut release by enlisting the services of canadian beatdown disco don eddie c. eddies profile has been on the rise since his magnificent debut record on jisco music. recent releases on wolf music, flashback and seven inches of love cemented the canadian beatsmiths reputation for crafting some of the finest mid tempo disco and electronic funk around. sleazy beats recordings have managed to snap up some of eddie cs finest work to date. from the gloriously deep & dreamy 9 minute space cadet to the heavy slo mo funk of get down and finally the discofied vocals in one with the stars. an impressively high quality all rounder of an ep.

the first release on the new deluxe mood label, featuring 3 tracks of lo-fi destined to appeal to afficionados of disjointed hihats and slowly mutating sub-bass electronics. production duo dark network emerged from a series of semi-conspiratorial electronic projects through the 1990s with their 2003 album late set, released through clan analogue recordings. they have been frequent contributors to vinyl and cd projects over the years (on imprints such as clan analogue, klub kooky and stoner classix) and appeared live at various underground venues. side a is the result of one such live appearance - a rare archival live set recorded at sydneys klub kooky in 2000, improvised on an array of aging analogue machinery.

deepart returns with his snapshots concept. deepart is andi hart, and if theres one man out there which keeps true to his own sounds its andi hart. hes been pushing his sounds for almost ten years now, ever without doing any concessions. this double 12 inch brings eight new typical deepart tracks, they come in his typical minimal lo-fi style, but with the soul deep within. sometimes warm, frantic some other time.

shaker plates is the vinyl sublabel of the very successsfull digital label >shak digital<. after two releases (including an angel alanis ep, remixed by classics luke solomon) its time for label owner rick n to present his first single, a collaboration with ruediga schneider from gawron paris (nordic trax), produced by sascha braemer and dan caster (supdub, berlin). on vocals you will find nick maurer, leadsinger of the american band greenskeepers (om rec, classic). they get massive remix support from sascha braemer (heinrichs & hirtenfellner, stil vor talent, dekadent) and dan caster (supdub, halbacht musik) themselves aswell as lopazz (getphysical, cocoon, compost, kompakt, circle) and his production partner zarook (kompakt, get physical, italic, circle, gumption).

chantals tracks are tinged with a hazy, nocturnal sadness, a touch of sexy, decadent disco glamour and a retro palette of sounds that reminds the listener of the synthesised soundtracks to john carpenters horror films. diegors & the dons (aka m. aguayo) tracks are testimonies to this fact. built simply but well, in the comeme style for maximum dancefloor power. the overall strangeness plus the syncopated melodies are distinctly latin and couldnt have come from any other label. cÓmeme is hot right now and this is definitely the best record they have done so far

blackstrobe are back from beyond. their newest dance floor gems are a foray back into the darkest realms of disco with their unique blend of boogietrance, softgoth, gaybiker house music. on their latest release they employ deep gothy hooks that match perfectly with a nostalgic italo flair and dark disco pulses. dancefloor zombies and casual listeners should find these retro-futurist tracks akin to the worlds of john carpenter and the twilight zone. trevor jackson >great release< // chloé >good tracks, will play them< // dj hell >great single<

after the well received all creation 12s delsin records drops yotokos >wet ink<. yotoko are shifty & domu (jcr, 2000black, archive). yotoko stands for a perfect fusion between broken beat, techno and soul.
their album is not about breaking barriers, but it is their own little twisted version of what they call techno. for yotoko techno can be heard in everything, so as such it is all techno. domu and shifty are influenced by lots of different stuff, soul, jazz, disco, hip hop, techno, some old break beat, new broken stuff.. as well 20 pence mad charity shop finds.. the album is about yotoko making music they think is cool and realizing that all this music is the same no matter what the bpm or groove.
domu started as sonar circle for 4 heros reinforced label. later on active as domu for labels as archive and 2000 black and together with archive label boss volcov for the jcr-label with their album as rima. shifty is domus longtime comrade, making his first musical public appearance as yotoko. the albums artwork will be done by amsterdams machine, who already took care of the kindred spirits releases.

slowly but surely, a constellation of young artists have expanded around ali, basti, philipp santé. in the night, they share the same decks thanks to the newly created souvenir booking entity. during the day, they swap beats and samples in the studio of tiefschwarz located in prenzlauer berg, building up a new creative energy, which is giving birth to the 23rd release of souvenir on vinyl.adam port, re.you and rampa, already had their own shines this year on souvenir. now, its the turn of &me (front room, keinmusik) and fischer & kleber to release a new must-have record permeated with the best groove coming from the german capital city. on the a-side, &me brilliantly hurts with bleed. he punches on the left with an unstoppable drum, weaves on the right with an hypnotic loop, that stirs mental alertness up, barks his anger with a digital whouah going fast and forward and compelling any dancer to incredible footwork. knocked out! robert fischer & niklas kleber had in common an electronic liveact discokonzentrat (high nrising records) and a band spurv laerke before bringing in their new project, fischer & kleber. they set with berki on the flipside the singular but no less enjoyable soundscape of a cathedral under construction. lightening up with deeply felt and almost religious whispers, the shrilling noises of computer-generated machine-tool, the mechanical and cold precision of a pitched down digital rock-drill, the duo turns >berki< into a canticle of the new millennium

these two fellas from upstate wanted to party, so we met downtown at the club later that night... fresh off the mystery meat imprints auspicious debut comes ncams double header deep house excursion. comprised of nick chacona and anthony mansfield, the bi coastal duo have reworked seemingly untouchable bits of discos past to come up with two sublime housey reworks. handle this is a firm favorite of one todd terje, and its no wonder what with its slow, hypnotic build. nick and anthony strip down a prelude classic to its core elements to create an otherworldly rework, teasing the female vox before they let loose midway through. the bongers is a not so subtle nod to the original source material, again with the boys retooling a classic from the prelude catalogue with dazzling results.

dualism are kwamina and gab from zurich. they produce music since 2005 and had their debut release on pheeks label archipel >dualism speech defect ep< in 2006.
today their sound appears minimally as twisted, queer-melodic deep and wicked techno with much love to the detail. their sound surprises with unconventional rhythm-structures and many-layered sound-design. their distinctive style and preference for idiosyncratically and broken sounds as well as the clever use of vocal snippets is always present on their productions.
the name-giving track of this ep is remixed by dapayk and also by estroe.

support from andre rozzo, alex jones, so inagawa, jamie jones, matthew styles-harris, laurent garnier, steve lawler, nic fanciulli. luna records is a new uk based label from respected club promoter/ dj/ producer paul bowen, the man behind middlesbroughs infamous >riff raff< events. the label is set to release music from some pretty well established artists with an emphasis on stripped back chunky house music and in that vein the debut single sees the much hailed german producer chris lattner step up get the imprint firing in the right direction. lattner has been djing for the best part of two decades, initially gracing the decks at hannover techno parties before word of his talent spread, seeing him strike out to play across germany. he has hosted a radioshow for australias pulse radio, worked as a booking agent for lessizmore and has had releases on labels such as einmaleins musik and wba. his passion for electronic music has shone through in everything he has done and led him to produce some great records, to which can now be added the luna debut >memory<. this single release kicks off with lattners original of >memory<, a solid tech driven slice of house with heavily effected vocal samples and a simple floor shaking groove. this is understated underground house music at its best, deep chunky and highly effective. first of the two remixes comes from ex-peace division man justin drake, who builds on the vibe of the original, thickening out the drums and layering some heavy filters over the sythn stabs to great effect. a straightforward and highly effective arrangement provides everything that is needed in this excellent reworking. finally we have a remix from bearweasel, who have been providing choice cuts in house music over the last year via labels such as tsuba, supernature, bloop and murmur. for their >lazy dub< they take things back to basics and turn in a slab of deep and dubby house with an emphasis on razor sharp percussion and earth moving bass. this is a superb debut from a label that is sure to become a major fixture in 2010.

european percussionist and afro-urban concept leader eric thomas performs live in clubs with music partner dj celyan for more than 10 years. they recently put their creativity together to make their first vinyl. the result is a tribute to some popular brazilian rhythms such as capoiera and samba adapted for clubs and djs.

the heels of love, the new milan based duo born from the joint between michele tessadri (fratelli riviera, bearfunk) and sapo (member of the love supremeproject on tirk) >two disco reprimands with an unhealthy penchant for slap bass, synths and vintage drum machines< has made a lot of noise lately with just a couple of works. after debuting here on mom with a huge remix that made its way up to beats in space and tsugis 2009 best of compilation they have had the first official release on david griffiths (the man behind jisco music) new label, under the shade. this one has sent them right into the chart of almost every known dj of the scene. >quiet please< is a slow, 110 bpm groovy piece of psychedelic disco that has its force in the balanced mix of the wobbling analog bassline, the p-funk guitars and the old flavouredsynth riffs reminescent of 1992 chicago house.

multi instrumentalist and singer maryja symone johnson and percussionist eric thomas joined together at the rhythm sticks festival in london in july 2004 to create new sounds that have been influenced by afro-caribbean origins. they have successfully performed at different concerts and festivals throughout europe. their first single >je suis music< edited by thiaba records is an adaptation of the original disco hit written in 1978 by international artist cerrone. afro-urban concept completely transformed this song by playing soca grooves with new melodies but the dance floor flavor stays alive. on side 1 is the vocal version with some extended piano, drums and percussions improvisations at the end. on side 2 the first track is an instrumental version recorded with the typical 70s sound where the drums and percussion are in evidence. the second track is more an hypnotic london drum n bass version.

stl is the production alias of stephan laubner who has been releasing material under a variety of pseudonyms on labels likeperlon, smallville, styrax and his own something records imprint over the past decade. stephans productions are like fine wine, they develop, mature and get better with age. his past releases have gained support and charts from detroit luminaries like derrick may & theo parrish to the berghain collective, ben klock, marcel dettmann & steffi. his recent licensing of silent state on cassys new simply devotion mix on cocoon, ames fabric mix, steve bugs the lab and earning the number 1 spot ingroove magazines chart all speak volumes about the level of love and passion he puts into his productions. with stephans check mate he pays homage to a sound we simply adore, a musical conceit only a select few understand, hand crafting his sounds with a variety of analog signal processors, vintage synthesizers and a loving touch reminiscent of the early deepchord years. this is one to treasure, made for repeat listening

italian duo davide zeta and claudio basile moved to london from milan in 96 & 97 respectively, they quickly achieved themselves their individual niches in londons spotlight as promoter/dj duo, moving into production with their first official releases in 2008, claudio as a solo artist, and davide as part of slimboystwo. when they finally joined forces for their first release as dzeta n basile gained lots of attention from different record labels throughout uk and europe. claudios sound comes from a progressive background and davides has more of a house feeling. the result is a unique blend of hypnotic grooves, deep vibes and percussive/house beats, which is the trade mark of their style. after just more than a year running, with dj performances in londons most important venue and 10+ singles released, the future in 2010 is looking bright.
